Out of a Desert of Quietude

As a freethinker/atheist I wonder, for the recent invigorated activity of secularists and non-believers of many stripes can I thank President Bush and his conservative confederacy for their push to infuse religion further into pubic life? When the current reign of fundamentalist influence on politics abates, will the vigor of opposing viewpoints likewise lessen?
I guess my question could be worded this way: What precipitates and maintains social movements?
