Flying Squid

The above pic is of squid seen flying over dead coral in the Bahamas.
Okay, they were swimming. But isn’t water, in one regard, a substance simply much denser than air, thus squid do fly? Our atmosphere, on the other fin, is not a liquid but a gas. Might a person be justified in thinking of it as an ultra-thin liquid?
Poetically, sure. But are there any substances, I wonder, that make less obvious transitions between solid, liquid and gas? My guess is there probably are.
[Note: a quick Google search turned up millions of hits for both "gaseous liquid" and "liquid gas."]
