Heat and Shadows

Summer continues in Florida. Maybe high 80s today, vs. lower 90s. Still, nothing temperature-wise I recognize as a harbinger of autumn.

Later this afternoon I will sip a cocktail in the backyard, beside our small goldfish pond. I will do so in the shade — in other words, in the shadow of an overhead structure. With a fan blowing on me. Unless there is enough of a breeze without it.

Right now, outside the window, the wide leaves of our dwarf banana trees have folded in half, downward from center. Like an umbrella taken in. Even the banana has had enough sunshine and heat for the moment. When I venture out to do some work, I will be sure to slather some liquid shade on my skin. It’s hot.
